The Vast Majority of Shale Gas Wells and Light, Tight Oil Wells are Horizontally Drilled
As noted in the previous slide, shale well designs are governed by need to maximize flow area to capture free gas and to mobilize adsorbed gas in reasonable time frames.  This results in a number of frac treatments, called stages, being placed along the length of the horiztonal wellbore.  Initially, firms were placing 2-3 stages along 2000-3000' laterals.  The current range is 30-60 stages (we are seeing a few wells with as many as 90 stages) along 5000-10000' laterals.
